The Breweries
Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company
With brewmaster Doug Riley at the helm, the beer at Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company is great “beer drinker’s beer”. The ever addictive Shiva I.P.A., Houdini ESP, and, this webmaster’s favorite, Red Light I.P.A. tie in perfectly to their wonderful pizza and $3 movies. Often called the “Brew N’ View” by locals, Asheville Pizza is a one of a kind experience that only Asheville could foster. To keep your health in check, Asheville Pizza is now completely non-smoking. So enjoy fresh mountain air and a fresh beer. Online here.
French Broad Brewing Co.
Modestly described on their own website as a “15 barrel microbrewery creating fine lagers and specialty ales following European tradition with an American perspective.” We might change out “fine lagers” to “amazing lagers”. A multiple World Beer Championships winner, this webmaster’s favorite: the Wee Heavy-er Scotch Ale… toasted to perfection. Throw in the live music at their tap room and French Broad is an perfect way to invest a few hours of time. Online here.
Highland Brewing Company
Highland Brewing is Asheville’s first brewery. Founded in 1994, Highland handcrafts an impressive selection that has become a favorite of our area. A multiple award winner, Highland expanded operations, and is now located at the Blue Ridge Motion Pictures building, just outside of town. Great beer and a great staff are a win-win combo for the beer lover, and Highland has both in spades (as well as that amazing seasonal brew: Cold Mountain Winter Ale!)Online here.
Green Man Ales
Provided to the Asheville community by Jack of the Wood - a cozy, Celtic style pub located in Downtown. Handcrafted English style ales are brewed at our nearby brewing facility and served fresh daily. On a typical evening at Jack’s you will find many of the patrons gathered around the black walnut bar or at long tavern tables, engaged in conversation through which the taboo subjects of art, religion and politics are heavily woven. Others play darts or scan the papers while sipping pints of ale or munching on a plate of fish and chips. When the local musicians are fiddling away on Irish reels or picking some olde time mountain music in the corner with the wooden shutters closed against the night, you can blink your eyes and imagine yourself in the Celtic Isles or Colonial America. Green Man now offers a second location, “Dirty Jack’s” - a favorite location to Asheville’s locals, and where we typically tour for samples of this Celtic brewery. Online here
